German recipe and medical notebook

German recipe and medical notebook from early 18th century with later additions. A manual of medical and dietetic wisdom opening with 100 Latin aphorisms attributed to the twelfth century medical school at Salareno. It consists of recipes and preparations, in both Latin and German, in the form of apharmacopoeia for hundreds of cures for the basic medical condition including melancholy, insanity, apoplexy, paralysis, spasms, ulcers, red eye, loose teeth, lung pains, heart palpitations, and plague. The herbs and their properties are listed and most of the recipes provide detailed quantities for their preparation.

The majority of the manuscript is in a single hand predominantly in Latin, though occasionally it reverts to German, often within a single paragraph.

The opening text is derived from the medieval text of the opening portion of the Rule of the School of Salerno, a school active in Salerno in the early second millennium.
