About this work
Description
Victorian scrap in full colour showing a young woman at a street stall collecting money for the Hospital Saturday Fund, a London-wide scheme to raise money for "hospitals, dispensaries, and convalescent homes", founded in 1873 and incorporated in 1890. It was based at 41 Fleet Street. A sailor in blue, jack tar uniform, a carpenter with hammer and saw in a basket over his left shoulder, a dog and a lady with a rolled umbrella are looking at the stall which has 2 potted plants weighing down a series of leaflets. Scraps were sold in sheets, die-cut around and were collected and pasted into books by children.
