Described in this etching as by Giorgione, the work was subsequently considered as "peint dans le goût du Giorgion" (Catalogue des tableaux, loc. cit.), and was later attributed to Callisto Piazza (Marandet, op. cit., p. 200)

After a painting in the collection of Charles Clinet de la Châtaigneraye (d. 1732). His paintings were sold in his posthumous sale of 1733: the present work was described as "Un tableau de trois pieds neuf pouces de haut, y compris sa bordure dorée, sur quatre pieds deux pouces de large, peint fur toille, representant un portement de croix, plusieurs demy figures, peint dans le goût du Giorgion" (Catalogue des tableaux, loc. cit.)
