Description
Two British Quaker women providing relief to casualties of the Franco-Prussian War for the Friends War Victims Relief Committee (FWVRC). They wear white armbands containing an eight-pointed star. The activities of the Société Anglaise des Amis (Quakers) are described by James Long, loc. cit., where he provide the identities of the sitters: J. Augusta Fry ("Distribution de vêtements et autres secours — Soins des malades — Organisation de travaux de broderie, de tricot et de couture.") and Richenda E. Reynolds ("Surveillance des fourneaux économiques — Distribution des vêtements et d'autres secours — Organisation de travaux de broderie, de tricot et de couture."), both of London. During the Franco-Prussian War, Metz was besieged by the Prussian army from August to October 1870
On the right of the photograph, pasted on to a board, is a large drawing, photograph or lithograph of Metz Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz, Cathedral of Saint Stephen)
