Biographical note
Several members of the Stevenson family worked as civil engineers based in Edinburgh, being particularly associated with the erection of lighthouses around the coast of Scotland for the Commissioners of Northern Lights. Although they had professional contacts with George and Robert Stephenson of Newcastle (see MS. 7685) they were not related. Represented here are Robert Stevenson (1772-1850) and his sons Alan (1807-1865) and Thomas(1818-1887); the writer Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was the son of Thomas Stevenson (no. 3).
