McLeod, Professor James Walter

Professor James Walter McLeod OBE, FRS, FRSE, HonFRCPath, MB, ChB, LLD, was the Chairman of the Central Penicillin Committee, Leeds. Penicillin Committees were set up in 1944 in medical schools throughout the country to distribute penicillin, which, until this timehad only been available to the services. The Ministry of Health issued guidelines as to what conditions warranted the prescription of penicillin. Patients were admitted to hospitals by their doctor and it was the responsibility of the hospital to obtain the necessary amount of penicillin by applying to the Committee.

Professor McLeod, who was Professor of Bacteriology (Emeritus) at Leeds University, died c.1978.
