Biographical note
Initially a study group established to facilitate communication and research between clinicians working in the field of epidemiology around the world, membership of the Association in its early years was open to those who supported its aims and had made original contributions to knowledge in this area of social and preventive medicine. Members were elected by the Executive Committee after consideration of their CV and publications, and were expected to contribute a short article to the Bulletin, published twice a year. Membership dues included subscription to the Bulletin, and later, theInternational Journal of Epidemiology (IJE)
By 1977, nominations for membership were reviewed and members elected by a Membership Committee appointed by Council, which also determined annual membership dues. Categories of membership are Ordinary Members, Senior Members and Honorary Members (IEA Constitution and By-Laws, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3).
As the membership and educational activities of the organisation increased, the work and role of the Membership Committee and Secretariat expanded. The major responsibilities of the Secretary are:
Other tasks of the IEA Secretary include providing information regarding the aims, work and development of the Association, and dealing with correspondence with members, meeting organisers and international agencies.
By 1990, membership was expanded to national associations or groups of individuals from countries with a very low GDP, in order to share membership dues between those practitioners and support their participation in Regional and International meetings, seminars and workshops.
