    REPORT. In presenting a Eeport of proceedings during the ttime I have been in office as Coroner for Central ’Middlesex, I am following the example set by my Hate predecessor, Dr. Lankester, who inaugurated the j practice of giving an annual Eeport, which, at his own (expense, he continued for seven years. At the present time, whilst a Bill is before Parlia- ; ment for consolidating and amending the Laws relating tto Coroners, it is opportune to review the practical '.working of this ancient institution, since its value ;ancl usefulness, so much questioned by some, will be rmore fully tested. The scope, object, and duties of ; a Coroner having somewhat changed by recent legis- ilation, no doubt necessitate modification to work in I harmony with modem institutions. Besides a personal object in view, of removing ' charges detrimental to myself, viz., of holding unneces- ' sary and improper Inquests, I desire also to dispose of imputations calculated to impair the dignity of the office, and to damage its usefulness in the interests of the public.
