Professor Savage was appointed locum lecturer/honorary senior registrar at the Mile End Hospital in November 1976. By August 1977 she had been appointed Senior Lecturer at the London Hospital Medical College and Honorary Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to the Tower Hamlets Health Authority.
In April 1985 she was suspended from her role as Honorary Consultant, on alleged grounds of incompetence based on her handling of five specific cases.
The official enquiry took place in February/March 1986 and eventually cleared her of all charges of incompetence.
In July 1986, the Tower Hamlets Health Authority voted unanimously for her reinstatement and she returned to work in October of the same year.
On her return to work, the perceived dysfunctionality of the department meant that it was organised into two "Firms", although it took many years to properly establish the system.
