About this work

Description

Three communications from Dr W Dowson to Henry Wellcome, as follows:

1 January, 1905. Ts carbon copy. Detailed report on horses and serum production. Appended to the report [7 numbered sheets] are:
"Relation between number of horses and serum production" [1 sheet];
"Number of horses at present in stables (treatment specified) [ 1 sheet];
"Working details of the production of serum at a distance from Brockwell Hall [2 sheets];
"List of books" to be purchased [ 1 sheet].

27 February, 1905. Holograph carbon copy. Recommends the appointment of Dr Südmersen, and comments on Henry Dale: "You were quite right about our physiologist but ... so was I. His energies are all in the right direction and you will be glad to hear that he is doing epoch-making work at ergot...." [3 sheets].

21 March, 1905. Ts, signed [3 sheets]. Refers to forthcoming scientific exhibition at Liege. "An interruption at present such as would be caused by the preparation for an exhibition would involve a very serious waste of animals and opportunities, and I shall regard it as a marked instance of your apppreciation of the nature of the work which is going on here if I can have your consent to the elimination of the WPRL from the Liege scheme." In the course of making his case to Henry Wellcome, Dowson usefully summarises the current work of the WPRL. The contribution to the exhibition of the Wellcome Chemical Research Laboratories, however, were to result in a Silver Medal (see WF/E/07/03/16).
