Acquisition note
Purchased from: Charavay, Paris, October 1928 / April 1929 (acc.63700) and at an unknown date before 1936 (acc.69220); Desgranges, Paris, November 1932 (acc.65659 and 65667). Some items from the French Collection of books and manuscripts transferred from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum to the Library in 1964, whose earlier provenance is not recorded (acc.311223).
Biographical note
Mortillet was one of the pioneers in the field of prehistory. He had been educated at the Jesuit College at Chambéry and later at the Paris Conservatoire. He had to leave France in 1848 for political reasons, and on his return was associated with Broca in the École d'Anthropologie.
