About this work

Description

In 1968, the MRC set up three Working Parties to examine the requirements for research into aspects of drug dependence. The three Working Parties considered Biochemical and Pharmacological Aspects of Drug Dependence, the Evaluation of Different Methods of Treatment of Drug Dependence, and the Epidemiology of Drug Dependence. Reports were presented in June, 1970, when the three Parties were disbanded. Subsequently, a small Working Group on Drug Dependence was set up under the chairmanship of Dr S G Owen (MRC), charged with the task of co-ordinating action to implement the recommendations of each of the three Working Parties. A further Working Party on the Biological Aspects of Drug Dependence was set up under Paton's chairmanship with new membership and revised terms of reference, holding its first Meeting on 6 July, 1971.
